How (and how much) you talk with your child about the assessment will depend on their age, temperament, and level of insight. There is no single “right” way to do this. Many families find it helpful to keep conversations strengths-based, respectful, and developmentally appropriate, and to revisit them over time rather than trying to explain everything at once.

When neurodivergent diagnoses are involved (such as ADHD, autism, or learning differences), it can be especially important to frame the assessment as a way of understanding how your child’s brain works, rather than as something being “wrong” or needing to be fixed.
