Is your child struggling at school?
Is your child avoiding schoolwork out of frustration?
Do they find reading, spelling, or maths challenging - or show wildly different abilities across subjects?
If they’re progressing more slowly than their peers, a psychoeducational assessment can help you determine whether an underlying learning difficulty exists.
What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is an in-depth evaluation of your child’s cognitive abilities, academic skills and adaptive functioning skills such as self-care and life skills. It provides insights into how your child thinks, learns, and processes information to help us diagnose Specific Learning Disorders, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia, Intellectual Disability, or Intellectual Giftedness.
This assessment may be requested by yourself, a teacher or a health professional.
The key areas we evaluate:
-
Problem-solving skills, working memory, and reasoning (IQ testing).
-
Assessing strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing, and maths
-
Evaluating emotional regulation, self-esteem, resilience, and social skills to understand how emotions and relationships impact learning and overall well-being.
-
Assessing key life skills, including self-management (organising self), learning independence, and self-care abilities such as dressing, eating, and grooming.
The results from these evaluations are used to create individualised recommendations to effectively support your child’s learning journey at home and in the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are you wondering?
-
No, the approaches don’t differ. However, we do use age-appropriate tests:
Parent-report for children and younger adolescents
WIAT – delivered in a grade (year) specific manner
WAIS for under 16
WISC for over 16
Self-report for 16+

If academic or learning difficulties are identified during an ADHD or Autism assessment, we often recommend a psychoeducational assessment to gain a broader understanding of the issue.
The scope of the assessment is discussed after we’ve collected the initial information.
-
A dedicated feedback session is offered as part of the assessment to go through the findings and recommendations. The detailed psychoeducational report that families get access to are also designed to be shared with educators and other professionals.
We are also happy to answer follow-up questions post-assessment. “Cheat sheets” are provided to families that summarises strengths, weaknesses and strategies on a single page.
